Building relationships with communities, organisations & other stakeholders in order to further the aims of specific biodiversity and conservation projects
Main duties:
-Liaising with stakeholders with regard to environmental education, public awareness and community conservation matters
– Establishing and building relationships with relevant communities and stakeholders
– Promoting the conservation agenda through dialogue with community groups
– Developing a conservation education strategy through enhanced materials and experiences
– Developing educational awareness and community conservation programmes, including resources for schools, individual households, community groups and visitors
– Implementing these programmes in conjunction with educators, community members and key stakeholders
– Develop and distribute communications to enhance the knowledge of work being done
– Regularly update community representatives on conservation issues to encourage them to be champions in their local communities
– Marketing of conservation management through websites, newsletters, social & print media, as well as exhibitions and events
Additional duties:
– Recommending adequate mitigation measures in line with the project’s guidelines
– Providing conservation management assistance as necessary
– Assist with field operations if and when needed
– Assist with hotline duty in conjunction with the other members of the team
– A relevant tertiary qualification in Environmental Education, Nature Conservation or related field
– Good knowledge of human-wildlife conflict issues, especially baboon related
– Environmental education, public engagement and community presentation experience
– Computer proficiency in MS Office packages
– A valid Code EB driver’s licence
– Willingness and availability to work flexitime, both after hours and during weekends
– Proficiency in at least two of the Western Cape’s official languages is an advantage
– Knowledge of baboon behavioural ecology or research/management experience of baboons is an advantage
– Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
– Good interpersonal skills: genuine sensitivity to the needs of others, deals with others in a respectful manner, cultivates and nurtures relationships and networks with colleagues, clients and stakeholders
– Highly motivated
– Excellent conflict resolution skills, ability to work well and remain calm under pressure
– Shows initiative and creativity in approach to environmental education
– Enthusiastic and energetic with a passion for conservation
